Give-a-Way Winners: The Anderson Family

If you recall, a few months ago we offered a free portrait session to an individual or family who hadn’t had professional portraits taken in at least 5 years. The Anderson family entered the give-a-way and won!

They told us that although it was a dream of theirs to have a professional portraiture session, they had never had one. We are so glad we were able to give them what they’ve always wanted. Besides, this family is FUN which makes it all the better.

We were planning on taking the pictures outside around Union Station in Ogden but it was pouring rain and snow. Luckily, while wandering around inside the building, we happened upon the most beautiful wood floors and brick walls. It was fate! Here are some of the shots.

Photowalking Utah – Studio Photowalk

I posted these images on Flickr soon after the photowalk but never posted them here on the blog!  Crazy I know.  The Photowalking Utah – Studio Photowalk (official site) was held back in February and was a tremendous success.  Several photographers spent hours organizing and preparing to showcase a specific type of shot for the attendees to try.  The Photowalking Utah crew is passionate about sharing photography, teaching, and having a good time.

It was so busy that I only made it to a few stations (3 out of about 7); however, I had such a blast talking with tons of photographers and making a few shots.  I hope you enjoy these few images that I made.

Lost?

Shot on March 3rd in Midvale, Utah with a Nikon D90 and the 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. The image was shot at 105mm, 1/200s, f/8, ISO 200, using Aperture Priority Exposure mode. The image was post processed using Lightroom 2.6.

I came across this seemingly misplaced bottle in a wide alley.  I am really affected by this image.  The bottle is wet from recent rain and covered in black particles.  The feeling of abandon and displacement is strongly stated.

I wish we as a society only left bottles behind.  One of the biggest tragedies of the past and our current generation is the suffering of children due to the selfishness of adults.  Parents, love your children and teach them well.  To foster parents out there, Thank you.

Connecting….

Shot on March 3rd in Midvale, Utah with a Nikon D90 and the 35mm f/1.8 lens. The image was shot at 35mm, 1/60s, f/1.8, ISO 800, using Aperture Priority Exposure mode. The image was post processed using Lightroom 2.6.

During a recent photowalk with some coworkers, I came across an old switchboard.  I found it completely fascinating with all its knobs and dials.  We just don’t make stuff like this anymore. Here is an interesting write-up on switchboards on wikipedia.  A fun read.

I can’t wait to share more from the photowalk but time is limited so enjoy this for now.  :)

Etched - Midvale

Shot on March 3rd in Midvale, Utah with a Nikon D90 and the 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. The image was shot at 45mm, 1/400s, f/5.6, ISO 200, using Aperture Priority Exposure mode. The image was minimally post processed using Lightroom 2.6.

I came across this wall during a quick lunchtime photowalk in Midvale with a few coworkers.  We try to get out during lunch one a month or so to unwind and let the creative juices flow.  This wall was completely shaded yet sat opposite a similar wall approximately 40 feet away (crazy large alley) that provided significant fill light. Seems like a great place for some natural light portraiture (even though it is just a brick wall).

The etching, texture, and levels of the bricks are the reason I made this image.  I hope you enjoy it!

An Attitude of….

Taken with Nikon D40 on January 15, 2010 at 1/250s, f/1.8, ISO 200, at 35mm.  Edited using Lightroom 2. Off camera flash at fired at 1/4 power through 60” umbrella at camera left with fill bounced off nearby wall.

Any thoughts on this self-portrait?

Garlic – Food and Kitchen Series

Taken on January 31, 2010 with a Nikon D40 at 1/80s, f/6.3, ISO 200, using manual exposure mode. Conversion to black and white and post processing using Lightroom 2.6.

When Julie and I were recently married we exclusively used dried minced garlic flakes for our cooking needs.  At some point we recognized how easy it is to use fresh garlic and haven’t looked back.  We love fresh garlic!

If you’re using dried garlic, do yourself a favor; throw away the dried stuff, buy a garlic press, and keep a some fresh garlic on-hand.  It is a win-win situation, improving the taste of your meals and even looks good in the kitchen!
