Tip-or-Tech Tuesday – A Nod

A couple of weeks ago our Kids: Fill the Frame post was featured on our friend’s Get Taste blog. How cool!

Two friends Rob went to high school with are interior designers and have a blog “designed to help you get taste when it comes to matters of interior desing and decoration.” They’re quite frank when it comes to bad taste and it makes for fun read.

You may wonder what photography and interior design has in common, but as Andrew said, “Good design is good design.”

Browse their blog and you will fnd good info, good resources, and good laughs.

Tip or Tech Tuesday – Favorite LR Shortcuts!

adobe-lightroom-logo

Here are a few keystroke shortcuts that I use all the time.

Using the F key toggles through full screen modes.  I love to work in full screen mode!

In the develop module the Backslash key toggles between current view and a view of the image before any edits were made.

In the Library module use the N key to compare multiple images.

In the Library or Develop modules (this may work in others but I haven’t tried it) use the Shift+Tab keys to hide all the panels.

In the Library or Develop modules (this may work in others but I haven’t tried it) use the L key to toggle light lights out modes.  I love this to remove the distractions of the interface when I really need to concentrate on the images.

Get move quickly to the Library module use the G key (Grid View).

I typical combine the G, N, Shift+Tab, and L (twice for full lights out mode) to compare multiple images.

Hope that helps to streamline some of your workflow.  I use these shortcuts every time I sit down to edit pictures.

Tip-or-Tech Tuesday – Two Questions

Rob and I both follow many photography blogs…some tech, some portraiture. kamee june photography is one blog that I’ve followed the last year and a half. Kamee is based out of Orange County, CA and has a beautiful talent for getting natural portraits. It’s quite a bit different from our style (another post on that another week), but I like to see other styles in order to enhance our own.

The other day she wrote a WONDERFUL post about the two questions clients always ask, “What should I wear?” and “Where shall we go?” Instead of me spending hours writing my own post, I’m going to direct you to hers. I recommend reading this. It’s full of good advise and amazing pictures. Although I don’t agree 100% with everything she says (as a matter of style), it’s all very relevant.  Here are just a couple of points she makes in case you don’t have the time to read it all.

  • i love location shoots, but if you are wanting to simplify photo season do something close to home, really close to home. try your porch, or stoop, sidewalk, or street.
  • family pictures are so interesting when the family is engaged in something. the smiles and laughs are so genuine. those are the memories you want to immortalize, those are the times you want to remember forever. something i really enjoy about family portraits is when the family doesn’t pay attention to me, but each other.
  • note to the parents: this will take away so much stress!! don’t spend any time at a shoot telling your kids to look at the camera. especially during family shots. the majority of the frames capture your lips in funny contortions of the words, “loooook atttt , theeee, camerrraaaa.” or your fingers pointing at the photographer, trying to get your kids to look at the stranger with a hug black apparatus in front of her face.
  • kiss and hug each other.
  • match, but don’t be too matchy matchy. pops of color are so interesting and exciting to see. it really works when someone wears a solid and someone else wears a pattern that incorporates the solid. and it super, ultra works when both are great colors. texture, stripes, rad patterns with bright color all in the same palette= sheer awesomeness.
  • don’t allow the anxieties of wardrobe or the precarious personalities of children(or adults) deter  you from making lasting memories!!

So next time you get your portraits taken, relax! It’s all in good fun and the pictures will be beautiful.

PS…don’t judge our work too harshly against kamee june as we’re just starting out on this venture of ours. But she has wonderful talent and is a supremely nice person.  Check out her webpage and her blog for more info.

Tip-or-Tech Tuesday – Lightroom 2 Workshop

Urban Style

We’re doing our quarterly RJ Snow Photography workshop next weekend. The topic is Lightroom 2. Click here for more information on what will be covered.

This really is a great opportunity to learn more about the program in a fun and friendly environment. We’re not planning on a large group, which means more of your questions will be answered and more hands-on work will be done.

So we’re better able to plan, please contact us soon if you’re planning on attending.

The date and time is Saturday, November 14th from 10:00 am to Noon.
