Foto Friday – Creepy

Creepy

Taken with the Nikon D40 at Wheeler Farm in Murray, Utah  on April 22, 2009. Aperture-Priority Exposure Mode, 34mm, 1/30 sec at f/4.5 ISO 800, –1.3 exposure compensation, Nikon Raw Format converted to Adobe DNG format. Edited in Lightroom 2.3

About a month ago, I got a few people from the office together to go on a photowalk around the corner at wheeler farm.  There are several of us in the office that enjoy photography such that every couple of months we want to get out during lunch for a photowalk.  While thinking about what I wanted to shoot at wheeler farm, several choices presented themselves to my mind.  Most of you know that I have somewhat of a penchant for the textured, rough, and even the creepy. So it shouldn’t surprise you what type of shot I would take when farm equipment was involved.  :)

This image was taken in one of the barns where they demonstrate milking (a cow) and usually let the kids try. Soon after arriving on the scene I realized that I forgot my remote trigger which foiled my plans.  Arrgh!  So I pretty much made the shot with available light only and added my greeniness in post.  How do you like it?  Farm equipment is so creepy and I love it.

It isn’t too hard to shoot in low light conditions without a tripod if you are willing to brace your elbows into your sides and against your chest, practice several breathing techniques, and take a bunch of shots in continuous exposure mode. I almost always get the shot when I do all of those things.  That doesn’t sound hard right?  No, not hard just some effort that many are not willing to take.  I included the original shot below.

To recreate the image I saw in my mind, I wanted to make the shot very green, textured, and most of all dark (but not so black as to loose all the detail). Used split-toning to get the green and brown balance right, some mid-tone sharpening to get some umph out of it, and some vignetting for a little more mood.  Scary huh?

Finally, a shot of the photowalkers!
